Opinion: West Ham might have transfer regret over missed striker target

Former West Ham target Hwang Hee-Chan is proving the Hammers wrong for not signing him, having made an immediate impact for Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to several reports from January and this summer’s transfer window, including The Telegraph, the Hammers could have picked up the South Korean international for less than £15million but a deal never materialised.

Since then, the 25-year-old has signed for Wolves on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy for £13million. Now, the striker has scored three goals in four games for the midlands side, forming a solid partnership with the prolific Raul Jimenez on his return from injury.

Although it is still early days, this would have left a fair few West Ham fans frustrated at what could have been. The Hammers have been in good form in front of goal so far this season, but still have only one out and out striker in Michail Antonio.

Hwang Hee-Chang has previously shown this kind of attacking nature at his former clubs. He scored 45 goals and produced 29 assists in 126 games for RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga.

This also included recording an impressive 38 goal contributions in the 2019/20 season, before securing a £9million transfer to sister club RB Leipzig in Germany.

Although his scoring form dipped over the last few seasons due to a lack of game time, Hwang Hee-Chan looks back to his best in a Wolves top.

David Moyes will be happy with his current Hammers squad going into the rest of the season, but might feel like there has been an opportunity missed with Wolves’ new frontman – especially if he continues with these types of performances.
