Former Premier League striker Brian Deane believes West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone would be a ‘good candidate’ for West Ham this summer.
David Moyes could be set to enter the market for a new stopper as both Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph begin to suffer from injuries.
The 36-year-old Pole was set to start against Johnstone’s West Brom on Wednesday – only to pick up a knock in the warm-up.
Recently relegated with the Baggies, much has been made as to whether Johnstone could extend his own stay in the Premier League into next season.
Despite further interest in the 28-year-old from Tottenham, the Hammers are believed to be leading the pursuit.
This had led former Sheffield United frontman, Deane, to have his say to Football FanCast on the possibility of the 6’4 ‘keeper pitching up at the London Stadium.
He’s saved more than anyone else in the league and certainly when I’ve seen him, he’s looked a very good player. I think he would be a good candidate. He’s not let anybody down at West Brom and that could be a good move.
This season Johnstone has been a beacon of hope for the Midlands club in what has been an otherwise dismal one-year top-flight stay.
In 36 Premier League appearances, the England youth international has earned an average Sofascore rating of 7.03.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Signing Johnstone would be a shrewd move from the Irons.
Fabianski has no doubt been a magnificent servant to the east Londoners, however, time is far from on the Polish star’s side.
If West Ham are going to continue to compete among the upper echelons next term and beyond, a goalkeeper of Johnstone’s quality and age would be a major statement.
