West Ham are in line for a value-for-money signing after reports from The Sun emerged linking the Hammers with a free transfer for Lyon captain Marcelo.
The 33-year-old Brazilian is an experienced leader in the heart of OL’s defence, with the links indicative of where David Moyes may see his priorities as the Hammers look to potentially dip into the January transfer market.
The club almost forked out £20m for the defender in the previous January window, with the player ‘desperate’ for a move to London in a development which is a further boost for the experienced defender.
He caught attention for playing an instrumental role in shoring up the Lyon defence in the Champions League when they eliminated Manchester City in the quarter-finals last season.
According to The Sun, a source close to Marcelo said: “A number of clubs are interested [in Marcelo]. But there was a good feeling about West Ham from the last time they spoke. It’s a great opportunity.”
His contract at the Groupama Stadium expires at the end of the season.

Patience and building a rapport may have saved the Hammers a substantial fee, potentially freeing up funds to invest elsewhere.
Given Marcelo’s experience and contract situation, he could represent a bargain who offers plenty of leadership, discipline and hard work at the heart of defence.
Although he may be approaching the twilight of his career, he may be keen for a fresh start in the Premier League and could serve as a mainstay in Moyes’ plans for a few seasons if West Ham make a move for him this time around.
