West Ham defender Winston Reid is likely to be sold instead of returning to the London Stadium, according to popular insider ExWHUemployee.
Reid enjoyed an upturn in form this year following a difficult spell with injury and illness as he helped guide Sporting Kansas City to the top of the MLS Western Conference, making 12 appearances in total and chipping in with two goals.
Still just 32 years old and with a wealth of Premier League experience for the Hammers behind him, some may have expected the New Zealand centre-back to return to London and play a part under David Moyes once again.
However, speaking on The West Ham Way podcast [via Hammers News], ExWHUemployee cast doubt over Reid’s immediate future in east London, saying:
I wouldn’t think so (that Reid has a future at West Ham) not with Craig Dawson there as well and the fact that the three centre-backs are playing well.
And the fact that you’ve got (Issa) Diop, I just can’t see it. He earns a lot of money (and) he’s very injury prone.
By all accounts he did very well in MLS but it’s not really saying much is it, Bradley Wright-Phillips was the top scorer in MLS for years… it’s not the best thing to judge it on.
If he comes back and he trains well and he stays fit then you know there might be a chance for him. But I think the club will try to get rid of him when they can unfortunately for him because he’s been a great servant of the club.
The Irons sealed a deal to sign Dawson as the summer transfer window came to its conclusion – although the on-loan Watford man is yet to make a single top-flight appearance for the club.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Whilst nobody wants to see such a loyal and at times pivotal performer fade away to nothing at a club, the time has perhaps unfortunately come for Reid to move on to pastures new.
With Dawson and Issa Diop both struggling to get a look-in – as well as the potential January arrival of Frederik Alves from Danish club Silkeborg – unfortunately, there doesn’t seem a foreseeable route to action at West Ham for the powerful Reid, who joined the Irons a decade ago.
