West Ham’s interest in Jones could spell trouble for Reid

According to a report on The Mirror, West Ham United are plotting a summer swoop for Manchester United defender Phil Jones and we feel that could severely impact the future of Winston Reid.

The Red Devils are set to allow Jones to leave for around £12m in the summer transfer window and the Hammers are facing competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

If the Hammers do continue pushing for Jones’ signature, then that could spell the end at West Ham for Reid.

In October 2019, the centre-back made his return to action after missing 19 months because of some severe knee issues (Football London) but he is still yet to make a single top-flight appearance this term (Transfermarkt).

The Hammers may well be targeting Jones as a replacement for Reid, who is constantly battling for fitness and after missing such a long period of time, he might not be the same player that he once was.

Furthermore, Reid’s contract expires at the end of this season and at the moment, it doesn’t seem like he will be offered an extension because he is not playing any part in helping the team’s exploits on the pitch.

Jones is younger and more experienced in the top-flight, playing 200 times in the competition compared to Reid’s 166 appearances in the tournament so the move would seem to make sense for the Hammers.

As much as Reid has done for the club over the years, he’s currently a passenger in the squad and if the team wants to rise up the Premier League table over the next couple of years, we feel they can’t afford to have characters like that in the team.

matchday.
