As the January transfer window fast approaches, many West Ham fans may be eagerly anticipating mid-season arrivals to bolster the squad at the London Stadium.
David Moyes‘ side have made an impressive start to the 2020/21 campaign and, as such, there has been some clamour for the Scottish manager to double down on their positive beginnings by adding some meticulous mid-season signings.
However, The Athletic’s West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas has suggested that Moyes could hold off on winter signings, telling the U Irons podcast:
In terms of January, I actually asked Moyes in a press conference last Friday, is he looking at bringing in a lot of players or players who could be first-team regulars or players who will be mainly squad players? And he was saying, the mindset he’s in right now [is] he would rather go big in summer.
He would rather go big in summer and recruit players then, as opposed to trying to sign a lot of players in January, which I thought was really interesting. So, that’s definitely something for West Ham fans to monitor in the coming weeks.
Instead, Thomas claimed that Moyes will wait and ‘go big’ next summer – perhaps owing to the difficulty of doing good deals in January as well as the ongoing financial implications of the global pandemic – difficulties which could be eased as fans gradually return to stadia.

Despite the apparent need for strengthening in certain areas, in particular central midfield and centre-forward, it would appear as if West Ham may not be a hive of transfer activity in the coming weeks.
Nevertheless, the January window is notoriously one which can throw up all kinds of irregularities and possible moves, so Moyes will almost certainly be ready to get deals done should they arise.
Whilst nobody was expecting the kind of groundbreaking double swoop which saw Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano arrive in 2006, some well-planned arrivals would almost certainly be beneficial without rocking the boat.
Some of the more advanced links for Irons have been with Bournemouth striker Josh King, AS Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara and Sporting CP winger Gonzalo Plata.
