West Ham join the race for Weston McKennie

West Ham have joined the race to sign Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie, according to a report from 90min.

The report has claimed that the Hammers are hopeful of beating numerous Premier League rivals to the American’s signature.

The club are believed to be keeping a close eye on the player, who has previously expressed his desire to play in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old has been a reported target for numerous clubs including, Southampton, Everton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, but now it seems like David Moyes is hoping to jump ahead of them all and sign the highly-rated midfielder.

As Everton seemingly line up targets elsewhere, the time could be right for Moyes to make his move. The USA international is said to be available for £22.5 million, a lofty some perhaps but when you consider his age and his potential, it could be a price worth paying.

McKennie appeared in 28 Bundesliga matches in a struggling Schalke side last term, scoring three goals. At the international level, he has six goals in just 19 appearances.

Moyes clearly wants to add additional strength to his midfield and with Mark Noble coming towards the end of what has been an excellent service to the club, a younger version will be required sooner rather than later.
