West Ham’s issues are not due to a lack of quality on the pitch but instead are due to a bad mentality, according to Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie.
Speaking on LFC TV, via InsideFutbol, the former Reds man revealed that he thinkd the troubles at West Ham are not down to a lack of quality, with the Hammers having plenty of players who are good enough for the top flight.
He thinks, in fact, thst there is a mentality issue that is dragging the Hammers down.
Gillespie said:
They’ve got decent players within their squad. I think it’s a mentality thing with West Ham, I really do. I’ve said all along this season that I think Aston Villa are going to go down, but West Ham have got to pick up [and] yes [they could both go].
[Moyes] initially came in and it was that new manager, a little bit of a lift. He’s got to get a tune out of [Felipe] Anderson, a tune out of these top players that are match-winners. Anderson for me is a real talent, but it’s a mentality thing. He just switches off and plays when he wants to play.

Gillespie does have a point, with West Ham certainly spending a lot of money of signings in recent seasons.
The Hammers spent over £100 million on signings this season, but they’ve still found themsleves in a relegation battle.
Despite their spending, they’re still struggling, which could mean that Gillespie is right, and that it is in fact a mentality issue.
Given the fact David Moyes’ track record isn’t that great, this does not look good for the Hammers going forward and he’ll need to get West Ham back on track if they are to have any chance of beating the drop.
