England manager Gareth Southgate has stated that there is still a chance for Jack Wilshere to work his way back into the England squad, Football.London reports.
The 2016 European Championship knockout defeat to Iceland was the last time that Wilshere earned an England cap, and despite starting all four of West Ham’s opening Premier League games this season he is still an omission from Southgate’s squad.
Wilshere joined West Ham on a free transfer from Arsenal in the summer but has been overlooked by Southgate in favour of Adam Lallana and Ruben Loftus-Cheek – neither of whom have started a League game this season.
However, Southgate has said that the international door is not closed to Wilshere:
I haven’t spoken to Jack, but we watch all the games and we watch all of the players and we’ll select on their performances. But the door is definitely not closed to anybody, because with just 65 English players playing in the Premier League, why would we rule out the potential of anybody?
At the moment it is worth me looking at and investing in some of the younger players available, but the key for Jack is to play well.
