Fabianski rues 4-0 defeat on Hammers debut

Lukasz Fabianski made his West Ham debut this weekend as the Hammers travelled north to Anfield for the season-opening match against Liverpool which ended in a 4-0 defeat.

With national 46 appearances for Poland to his name, Fabianski was signed from Swansea for £7 million on a three-year contract over summer, his debut for the Hammers will be one to forget.

Mohamed Salah took just 19 minutes to get proceedings underway with the first goal, with Sadio Mane following up just four minutes later, both shots from within six yards.

Mane followed up with a controversial third goal in the 53rd minute which looked offside before Daniel Sturridge sealed the match in the 88th minute with a final goal.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the new shot-stopper reflected on his competitive debut for West Ham.

It was tough. Obviously nobody likes to start the season by losing 4-0, but we knew it was going to be a very difficult place to come to play against a very strong team. We just have to focus on working harder now during the week to prepare for the next game and make some smart conclusions from this one.

Sunday’s game was the first competitive match for new manager Manuel Pellegrini, along with four other full-time debutants.

Going into the game Pellegrini stated that he had a desire for the team to play his own game rather than playing with a defensive line up to stop Liverpool.

We always tried to adjust to the situation and in today’s game, it is a very thin line between being onside or offside. In some cases, I think they caught us and they punished us. The third goal was a clear offside from my point of view and it’s up to the referee and assistant referees to make the right decision. But that’s a part of the game we need to continue to work on and hopefully we are going to be doing better against Bournemouth next week.

The Hammers will be working hard at the training ground this week to make sure they can bounce back hard on Saturday when they play at home to Bournemouth who beat Cardiff 2-0 in their opening game.
