West Ham’s right-back crisis and why its happened

Ahead of the Liverpool game at the London Stadium this Saturday, West Ham are having somewhat of a crisis at the right-back position.

The Hammers’ main right back this season has been new signing Pablo Zabaleta, who has been many fans’ choice for Hammer of the Year so far, by showing passion and skill in his game, however, this passion has earned him a one-game suspension, after picking up five yellow cards already in this campaign.

After the Crystal Palace game where Zabaleta picked up his suspension, the backup right-back Sam Byram was in line to replace the Argentinian, however, his chances were scuppered this week after suffering a quad injury in training which has made more fans start to question the training methods at the club.

With both of the natural right-backs injured, Slaven Bilic would usually call upon Michail Antonio to play at right-wing-back in a five-man defence, but he has also picked up an injury, which has led West Ham fans in pandemonium.

The only options now are to either play Edimilson Fernandes at right-wing-back, where he played a few times last season and didn’t impress when playing there. The other option is to play Alex Pike, a youngster who has played a lot for the U23’s, but many fans who watch the youngsters a lot have said that he doesn’t impress for the youth side.
