West Ham United have recently been linked with Sunderland ace Jermain Defoe and are said to be willing to pay £15m to bring the former England striker back to The Hammers, however, Sunderland do not want to sell according to the Sunderland Echo.
In the article by Roy Kelly, he mentions the fact that Defoe is ‘priceless’ to the current Sunderland manager David Moyes. This is very understandable as the front man has bagged 11 goals in 20 games in the Premier League this season, more than all of West Ham’s strikers combined, and is vital to Sunderland’s relegation battle as goals win games – and he gets plenty.
Kelly also mentions the fact that Jermain is hated by many West Ham fans for leaving to join fierce London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2004 who he scored 91 goals for in 276 appearances during 3 stints with Tottenham. Defoe is booed by the West Ham faithful every time he plays against The Hammers. I am sure many people will love Defoe back as he is a goalscorer and he will help West Ham for the rest of the season.
As mentioned in the article, West Ham legend Tony Cottee came out and said “Once he’s scored his first goal for the club we’ll be singing his name”. He also said “It’s important West Ham get a goalscorer in now because we want to move up.”. I completely agree with Cottee, once he starts scoring goals for West Ham he’ll start to be loved again like he was at his first spell at the club where he scored 29 in 93 appearances from 1999 – 2004.

In my opinion, I would love it if we signed Defoe. West Ham fans have been crying out for someone who gives you guaranteed goals for years and that is exactly what they’ll get with Defoe. There are many reasons why people do not want Jermain back at West Ham, one is because of the history he has with the club which many fans will let go if he pushes us on for a top 10 or top 8 finish in the Premier League. The second reason is because he is 34 years old, which in my opinion, doesn’t matter at all, if he is scoring goals, he’s scoring goals and his age doesn’t even come into question.
