How important is Pedro Obiang to West Ham United?

It was just over 13 months ago that we signed the young, talented and composed defensive midfielder, Pedro Obiang. This was a surprise to me as quite a few premier league clubs seemed to be sniffing around him, but not just that.

Italian and European giants, AC Milan were after the player too. Many reports were saying that Pedro’s agent had met with AC Milan and the move to the San Siro was almost certain. Despite these strong rumours, the Spanish U21 midfielder chose West Ham United as the team to join.

Obiang has suffered a hard year at West Ham, we have had Mark Noble playing out of his skin, Kouyate has been fantastic and of course the inclusion of Alex Song. This left Obiang joint 3rd or possibly 4th best to be starting as our defensive midfielder, a disappointment for many fans.

Although, West Ham have put a stop to all interest in the player suggesting that they want to keep him. I was not sure this would be the same story for Pedro because he must feel that he is underplayed and overlooked. Yet he wrote this tweet of reassurance, proving that he will not give up.

This tweet converts to “I trying to earn a place here and learn soccer. I believe that this year will be very nice“. I think that this shows how important this man can be, someone who is willing to fight for his place and will not give up.

This year will be a chance for him, squad depth is key and Bilic will certainly use him. The appearances that he has made for Spain U21’s is an indication of how good he is and what type of player he is. Last season he was extremely calm on the ball, never worried and always looked for the pass before picking the ball up. I am very excited to see what the season ahead brings for Pedro.
