West Ham face clear Wrexham challenge after impressive away run

West Ham United’s improving attack faces an intriguing test against Wrexham at London Stadium on Friday night.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side enter the game after three consecutive Championship victories, scoring ten goals across wins over Wolves, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers.

However, Wrexham’s recent away record suggests another comfortable home victory should not be taken for granted.

Phil Parkinson’s side have kept clean sheets in each of their last two Championship away games.

West Ham attack faces Wrexham away test

Wrexham beat Millwall 3-0 at The Den before holding Swansea City to a goalless draw in Wales.

That means Parkinson’s team have gone more than 180 minutes without conceding a Championship goal away from home.

The latest Championship form recorded by Sky Sports also shows Wrexham have conceded only once across their last three league matches overall.

Their 1-1 draw against Burnley on Tuesday extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

Read West Ham has already looked at Wrexham’s improved run before the trip to London Stadium, but their away defensive record creates a particularly interesting challenge for Nuno.

West Ham have been equally impressive going forward at home.

The Hammers beat Wolves 4-2 before producing a much more controlled 3-0 victory over Derby County four days later.

That gives West Ham seven goals across their last two Championship matches at London Stadium.

Nuno needs West Ham to find an early breakthrough

Friday therefore pits one of West Ham’s strongest recent trends against Wrexham’s clearest improvement.

Nuno’s side have found greater attacking fluency since the end of the transfer window, with Joël Piroe, Divine Mukasa and Edvin Austbø among those making important contributions.

Wrexham, meanwhile, have become considerably harder to break down.

An early West Ham goal could therefore be particularly important.

Parkinson’s side have shown they are capable of remaining compact for long periods away from home, while their 3-0 victory at Millwall also demonstrated they can punish opponents once space becomes available.

West Ham remain favourites and can move provisionally top of the Championship with victory.

But Wrexham’s recent away record provides a warning that Friday’s game may require more patience than the Hammers’ last two home victories.
