Joël Piroe believes West Ham United are beginning to click after Nuno Espírito Santo’s side secured back-to-back Championship victories with Saturday’s 3-0 win over Derby County. The striker opened the scoring after only six minutes and has now pointed to the improving understanding within West Ham’s new-look attack.
Piroe was restored alongside Taty Castellanos against Derby and the decision produced an immediate reward.
Jarrod Bowen’s deep delivery was headed back across goal by Castellanos before Piroe applied the finishing touch, giving West Ham the lead with a flowing move involving all three attackers.
It was Piroe’s second West Ham goal following his debut strike against Charlton, when he became the 100th player to score on his Hammers debut.
Joel Piroe sees West Ham attack beginning to click
Speaking in his latest interview with West Ham, Piroe delivered an encouraging assessment of the progress being made by Nuno’s rebuilt side.
The 27-year-old said West Ham are “starting to click” after a summer of major squad changes.
There were signs of exactly that against Derby.
Piroe’s opener came from the combination between Bowen and Castellanos, while Deadline Day arrival Edvin Austbø and Mohamadou Kanté later struck from the bench.
Our West Ham 3-0 Derby match report showed just how dominant the Hammers eventually became, with Nuno’s side producing 3.06 xG while restricting Derby to only 0.10.
Piroe’s comments are particularly significant given how little time this West Ham squad has had together.
The striker only completed his move from Leeds United in August, while several more additions followed before Deadline Day.
Seven goals across victories over Wolves and Derby suggest those attacking relationships are already beginning to develop.
West Ham now travel to Bolton on Tuesday, with the full schedule available through our West Ham fixtures and results guide.
Another victory there would provide further evidence that Piroe is right.
