- West Ham United remain in the Premier League relegation zone
- Tottenham Hotspur face Chelsea on Tuesday night
- Patrick Vieira states he would be “disappointed” with the Hammers’ relegation
West Ham United’s chances of making a spectacular Premier League comeback appear to be dwindling quickly, and now Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira has offered yet another devastating assessment of the team’s circumstances.
The Hammers are on the verge of relegation following their brutal defeat to Newcastle United, and their survival prospects are dependent on external results. With relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur two points ahead, unless Chelsea can do West Ham a favour at Stamford Bridge, the Hammers will be doomed before the final this weekend.
Vieira, who managed Crystal Palace three years ago, feels the writing is already on the wall for the Hammes.
Patrick Vieira states he would be ‘disappointed’ with West Ham relegation
Speaking on Sky Sports during Monday Night Football, the former Arsenal captain said he expects Spurs to get the result they need, thereby relegating the Hammers to the Championship.
The Frenchman believed West Ham had just given themselves too much to overcome following a poor run of results in the final weeks of the season. Despite Spurs’ lacklustre previous record at Stamford Bridge, Vieira believes Roberto De Zerbi’s side will take at least one point from the encounter.
“No. I think Spurs can get something at Stamford Bridge,” Vieira said. “I think West Ham have lost too many games. I see them going down.”
Vieira also recognised how upsetting relegation would be for a club of the Hammers’ calibre. He described the thought of the Irons dropping into the Championship as “sad,” citing the club’s status and history in English football.
“I feel disappointed because it’s a big club, a huge club in England,” he added. “Seeing them in that position is quite sad, but it’s too late for them to hope to survive.”
It’s another terrible reminder of how swiftly things have deteriorated in East London this season. Financial concerns are already emerging, with sources claiming West Ham may need to earn more than £100 million through player sales if relegation is confirmed.
Nonetheless, the most staunch supporters have a glimmer of optimism. West Ham must first defeat Leeds United on the final day and also count on Spurs to falter in their remaining games, with the Lilywhites facing David Moyes’ Everton on Sunday.
