- West Ham beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday
- The win keeps the Hammers outside of the bottom three
- There is four games left of the Premier League season
West Ham United continued to make strides in the Premier League survival fight as they secured a dramatic win over Everton. Callum Wilson netted a last minute winner as the Hammers kept the gap between them and the bottom three at two points.
Speaking to the club’s official website, West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo said the win was a huge moment for the team, but they have to keep going.
“I think one of the positive things that we achieve, especially here at home at London Stadium with our fans pushing and helping us, is that we don’t give up, the boys don’t give up.
“We could see it (Everton’s equaliser) was a big, huge blow for us, but the next movement was ‘OK, let’s react, let’s try and go’ and Jarrod showed us the way, put the ball in the right place at the right moment [and Callum scored].
“All the players are important, Jarrod with some assists and Callum, what can you say about him? The huge moment that Callum gave us today was huge, fantastic!”
Nuno acknowledges Everton were organized in their play, but say’s the Hammers were too.
“They are very organised, they have composure, they are mature, experienced players.
“We knew it was going to be tight, it was difficult to find gaps, it was difficult to break them, but at the same time we were in a good place. We were organised, the pressing was good, the gaps that we tried to close down.
“Of course, there’s a moment that they start putting crosses in our box, and we know how dangerous they are through crosses, second phase, third phase, to keep the ball there. We didn’t allow this to go, but overall I think we defended well.”
Home games so important to West Ham
The West Ham boss states that everyone deserves this moment at the club, most of all the fans. Nuno has emphasised that the team has two more home games left, and they will be so important if the Hammers want to stay in the Premier League.
“I was pleased with the composure that we showed, especially in the beginning of the second half, having patience, moving the ball foot to foot, trying to find the right moments.
“I think we really deserved to achieve the first goal, but you look back and what a way to suffer in the end! But I think all of us deserved this huge moment, especially our fans here at London Stadium.
“I’m speaking too much, but let me just pass this message: We have two more games to go here and I really hope that our fans understand the need and do what they did again today. It’s going to be huge for us. It does make a difference.
“When you hear the noise from the fans, it shows the respect that we have for and from them. We cannot thank them enough.
“I insist we have two more games here at London Stadium. We’re going to prepare for Brentford, but we know the energy that we have here at London Stadium. We hope it continues as we know how important is the home factor in the Premier League. Everybody knows that.”
With four games left, West Ham’s destiny remains in their own hands and Nuno say’s they will fight until the end.
“I think we are trying to find our own identity. We’re shaping the way we do things. I think we are slowly progressing, slowly progressing, but the commitment of the boys is there every day.
“We have to keep going. It’s going to be a fight until the end. Every day, every training session is important in our lives now.”
