West Ham are reportedly keeping tabs on Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier according to Football Insider.
The 21-year-old has been brought to the attention of the Hammers with a string of impressive Premier League performances and the report claims there’s interest in making the French youngster Lukasz Fabianski‘s replacement.
Fabianski turns 36 in April and will see his current West Ham contract expires at the end of this season, albeit there remains an interest in tying the Poland international down.
With no hint as to whether the Pole will extend his stay, David Moyes could be casting his eye elsewhere for a number one ahead of next season.
Recently the Frenchman’s agent, Xavier Fleury, added fuel to the fire insisting “big clubs” were interested in the Leeds star – although the possibility of an imminent transfer was played down.
Meslier has started 25 of Leeds’ 26 Premier League matches on their return to the top flight, earning an average Sofascore rating of 7.06 as well as acclaim from teammate Luke Ayling, describing the stopper as ‘brilliant’.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Signing Meslier from a genuine domestic rival, who the Irons face on Monday, would be a major statement of intent from West Ham.
At just 20 and having made an assured start to life as a top level ‘keeper, the Hammers would be landing a potential number one for many years to come.
Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, given his importance to the Yorkshire side and with two years left on his deal at Elland Road, there’s little scope for landing Meslier on the cheap.
If the interest is genuine, and there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t be, this could be one that requires some deep digging.
