West Ham United had a €25m offer for Real Betis forward Loren Moron rejected a few months ago, according to a report on Corriere dello Sport, and we believe that the offer says a lot about the club’s owners.
Moron is one of Betis’ star players, proven by the fact that he has found the back of the net 11 times in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt).
The 26-year-old was also a target for the Hammers in the summer of 2018, but he revealed that he turned down a move to London in favour of staying at Betis (Football Espana).
As stated in the report, the striker is valued at €40m by Betis, so why did West Ham offer €15m lower than his asking price?
One reason could be that the West Ham owners and board are no longer willing to spend big on players.
However, they’ve just spent over £20m on Jarrod Bowen in the January transfer window, so the offer is a little confusing.
Another potential explanation could be that the Premier League club don’t want to be spending over £30m on players, especially after last summer’s spending spree.
The Hammers paid £45m, a club record fee, for the services of Sebastien Haller, who hasn’t been the huge success that they would have hoped for, despite scoring seven league goals this season.
Or lastly, they just feel that Moron isn’t good enough to command such a high fee.
But the question then arises, if you feel he isn’t good enough, why even make an approach for him?
Instead of wasting time putting in pointless offers for players like Moron, the club could have identified realistic targets with enticing valuations and pursued them instead.
