Stan Collymore calls on West Ham owners to sell-up

Former Premier League footballer Stan Collymore has called on West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold to sell the club in his column for the Mirror.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker called out West Ham’s demands for an apology from Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement programme and called for the owners to sell-up at the London Stadium.

Gold and Sullivan have come under fire recently for their ownership of the club, with the move to the London Stadium and the poor performance of the Irons in the Premier League being the mate areas of criticism.

Collymore wrote in his column:

West Ham’s owners deserve the criticism coming their way because they have been given every building block needed for success but haven’t delivered.

The stadium, Premier League money and London — everything has been in their favour.

So it’s odd that David Sullivan, David Gold and Karren Brady should want to go on the offensive by making broadcast outlets put out apologies for statements made about them rather than continuing to repeat what Gold admitted a few weeks ago when he said, ‘We haven’t delivered, let’s look at ourselves and do better’.

The trio did okay at Birmingham and have done okay at West Ham.

But this isn’t 30 years ago when the football scene was a sea of average. You have to be good, and especially with their resources at their disposal.

Collymore has a point, with Gold and Sullivan not being awful owners at the club. West Ham did complete a move to a bigger stadium and have spent big money on the likes of Sebastien Haller.

But, as he says, you have to be great in the hugely competitive Premier League, and Gold and Sullivan have not put West Ham in the position to do so with strange appointments, such as David Moyes, and the fact the Hammers have failed to spend money well, with Haller failing to perform that well so far.

Results need to improve fast, and the pair have seemingly lost the backing of the supporters. Therefore, in our view, the best thing to do now would be to put the club up for sale, to at least get rid of some of the toxic atmosphere that is currently hampering the club.
