A new midfield target during the January transfer window has emerged, with West Ham United and Everton said to be interested in AS Roma’s Steven Nzonzi.
The former Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder has made 15 appearances on loan at Galatasaray this season, including five in the Champions League.
According to Turkish outlet Futbol Arena, both Everton and West Ham are ‘conducting transfer negotiations’ to sign Nzonzi permanently this month.
The report adds that he has already rejected an approach from Sheffield United because he wants to boost his chances of a place in France’s EURO 2020 squad by representing a bigger club.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
I think West Ham need to sign a midfielder before next week’s transfer deadline and an experienced head alongside Declan Rice could have a positive effect.
The 31-year-old wouldn’t help in terms of David Moyes’ ageing squad, but he’d present someone Rice could learn from and develop his own game.
Despite this, I believe there are better options out there, and especially younger options which West Ham could target.
If Moyes wants to build for the future, this speculation may have to be nipped in the bud, but it certainly seems he’s keen on recruiting a new midfielder.
