West Ham United and Manchester United’s interest in Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes has taken a blow, with Everton now in pole position.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim the Toffees have stolen the march in the race for Gedson’s services and an 18-month loan with a £34million option to buy in the works.
The 20-year-old has struggled for game time at Benfica this season and seems destined to depart before the transfer deadline passes. He’s featured just seven times in the league, failing to register and goal or assist.
Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be set for crunch transfer talks with Everton director of football Marcel Brands amidst the reports.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
For me, Gedson would add quality to the West Ham squad but he isn’t necessarily what the Hammers need at the moment.
He’s mainly featured as a more advanced midfielder in his career, and even on the right flank, and West Ham need a defensive player.
Pablo Fornals is starting to show promising signs and other talents such as Manuel Lanzini and Felipe Anderson are capable of playing in central, advanced roles.
Declan Rice needs support in his holding role and if this is the only midfield signing David Moyes makes this month, the money should go on someone else.
