West Ham United are in dire need of quality in-depth and the defensive midfield area is one of the squad’s weakest in that aspect.
Declan Rice has done brilliantly to cement his status as a regular, but other than captain Mark Noble his competition is non-existent.
If new reports are to be believed though, West Ham may have found their man ahead of the January transfer window.
According to Bleacher Report, Genk midfielder Sander Berge has chosen a move to the Premier League and is set to snub Liverpool for the Hammers.
Berge trained in East London as a 17-year-old and has since impressed in Belgium and the Champions League.
The report claims there’s a strong belief that West Ham can complete a deal for the 21-year-old for less than £20million.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
It’d be a phenomenal coup if the Hammers can fend off mass European interest in Berge and lure him to the London Stadium.
He’d certainly provide top class competition for Rice and holds bags of potential for the future, so he could potentially be Noble’s successor.
A new midfielder is definitely needed, with Carlos Sanchez pretty much counting the days until his contract expires.
It’s an exciting transfer story.
