Mark Lawrenson has been brutally honest in his Premier League GW3 predictions, admitting his doubt that Jack Wilshere will come good at West Ham United after a poor start to the season.
Wilshere was one of the Hammers’ stand-out stars during pre-season but has been brought off early in both league fixtures so far following ineffective displays.
Speaking to BBC Sport as part of his weekly predictions, Lawro spoke his mind about the former Arsenal man’s current situation at the London Stadium:
The Hammers will be fine but it will take some time. New signing Jack Wilshere has spent so long on the sidelines through injury and he doesn’t look up to it yet. Hopefully, he can get back to his best but it will be interesting to see whether he starts again.
The BBC pundit predicts Watford to come out as 2-1 winners.
READ WEST HAM’S VERDICT
How promising he looked during pre-season makes Wilshere’s start to the new campaign all the more disappointing, but there’s still time to turn it around.
He’s only 27 and with the amount of quality around him in the West Ham squad nowadays, if he stays fit there’s no reason why he can’t fulfil his potential at the club.
For this weekend though, I don’t think he should necessarily start. With Mark Noble now back, it’d make more sense for Wilshere to make an impact off the bench because it’s unlikely the club captain will be able to hack 90 minutes.
He’s high up on the wage bill though, so it’s time he started repaying the club with performances to match.
