For the first time since becoming West Ham manager, David Moyes has spoken to the media about the task at hand and how he plans on turning the clubs season around.
The former Everton and Manchester United manager says that his move to West Ham happened quickly and it’s a good move for him.
I was in Qatar and was asked if there was interest, said yes very quickly and I find myself here now. It’s good for me. I am back in, it’s what I do. I want to do well, I want the team to do well and it’s good for West Ham, I think I am a good manager.
Moyes has already had three training sessions with the players over the last couple of days since becoming manager, and he’s praised their attitude and work ethic in the short time he’s had with them.
I’ve been working with the players, we trained morning and afternoon today. There are about 8 or 10 here, the U23s have trained with his so they get a chance to see me and I see them. The players have been good, attitude has been excellent and we will keep them working hard.
Only on a deal until the end of the season, Moyes confirms that his aims remain in the short-term and he is just concerned with winning games.
This was a really easy decision to make. West Ham is a top club, great stadium and we WILL grow into it. I hope that the future is great for West Ham. My ambition is only short term because I have to win the games. I want to win the games, get away from the wrong end of the table, the squad is good enough.
After failures at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, Moyes admits that he has a point to prove at West Ham.
I have a point to prove. Sometimes you have to repair things and I have things I need to repair.
So what is Moyes’ blueprint to turning around West Ham’s fortunes? He says keeping clean sheets and securing the defence in the first zstep.
We have to get ourselves clean sheets, get bedded down. Let’s see if we can find a way of stopping conceding goals. I am a supporter as well and have an opinion about people who go there, people are entitled to their opinion. So many people are involved in the sport and as you well know, you won’t please everybody. I want to bring winning football first off before we talk about style. My biggest challenge is to get the team ready and the games come thick and fast.
Moyes’ appointment wasnt met with the greatest of receptions from the West Ham fans but he claims he will get the backing he wants when the results come.
There are so many avenues to voice your opinion. The best thing to do is win games and get the supporters behind the team. The players need to stand up as well. I wanted a big challenge. West Ham is a top club and I want to be a success and for everybody to enjoy that period.
A lot was made towards the end of Slaven Bilic’s tenure about his training methods which were not of the standard required. Moyes ensures that he will make his players work hard or they simply won’t play.
My best attribute would be on the grass, working with players and training them. But, we need the players to show it. Once they know they are not performing they need to take responsibility. We will give them sessions and plenty of them, it’ll be tough for them. There will be no favours. If they don’t do the running then they are not playing. I am in a hurry and they need to be as well. If you don’t do the training and you’re not fit enough then they won’t play. I can only tell eight of them right now, but the rest will hear it too.
To help him on the training ground, Moyes is looking to appoint his own backroom staff and hopes to have a clearer picture by the end of the week, with Stuart Pearce among this he has contacted.
In talks with a couple of people, Stuart Pearce one of them. Hopefully I will have something settled by the end of the week
