After two defeats to start their Premier League campaign, the Carabao Cup provided West Ham with a much-needed distraction.
The Hammers travelled west to take on League Two outfit Cheltenham who were looking for a major scalp and a spot in the third round of the League Cup for the first time.
Slaven Bilic fielded a strong side and was duly rewarded when Diafra Sakho gave the Hammers the lead with a well-placed shot into the far corner.
West Ham doubled their lead before half time when a well worked counter attack found Andre Ayew free in the box and he calmly put the ball beyond Jonathan Flatt in the Cheltenham goal.
The Hamers were dominant in the second half but were unable to add to their lead but a place in the next round is their reward for a solid night’s work.
