West Ham had a chance to close the gap on the Midlands club this weekend with a win but despite their best efforts they were cruelly denied all three points.
The Hammers were dealt a blow before the game when they were forced to rule out Andy Carroll from featuring due to an ongoing groin injury, meaning Michail Antonio was forced to be deployed as a sole striker on the day.
After a decent start to the game, West Ham gave away possession outside their own box which allowed Nacer Chadli to waltz in a coolly slot past Darren Randolph to hand the visitors an early lead.
From this point on, the Baggies were only focussed on sitting deep and taking time out of the game as they looked to battle and grind their way to another three points, but they were forced to throw their plans out the window when Sofiane Feghouli poked home from close range after Manuel Lanzini’s shot was tipped onto the bar by Ben Foster.
Most of the second period was spent in West Brom’s half of the pitch as the Hammers pressed for a potential winner which they thought they found when Lanzini’s 20-yard strike wrong-footed Foster with just three minutes to play.
A late, late corner for West Brom was whipped in by Chris Brunt where it was met by Jonny Evans at the back post whose header deflected off his centre-back partner Gareth McAuley and into the far corner to snatch an undeserved point for the visitors.
The Hammers remain five points adrift of the Baggies in eighth but have fallen to tenth themselves following results elsewhere. Here are our player ratings from the game.
