Spanish full-back Jesus Gamez is set to sign for recently relegated Newcastle United, amid interest from West Ham and Everton.
According to The Chronicle, Gamez is due on Tyneside within the next 24 hours, where he will undergo a medical examination before putting pen-to-paper on a contract.
The 31-year-old’s preferred position is at right-back but was used on the left-hand side on occasion by Diego Simeone. He is a natural leader and will bring a wealth of experience to a relatively young Newcastle defence.
Gamez follows in the footsteps of Matz Sels, rejecting Premier League interest to sign for the Magpies, despite their recent relegation to the second tier. The ‘Rafa effect’ at it’s finest.

The Spaniard’s move to Tyneside could explain why West Ham are expected to revisit a deal for Besiktas’ Atiba Hutchinson, a defensive midfielder capable of covering at either full-back position.
Defensive depth was certainly lacking for the Hammers last season, who were forced to play winger Michail Antonio at right-back for a lengthy period.
