Dimitri Payet says he isn’t the Premier League signing of the season

West Ham United midfielder Dimitri Payet has rubbished talk that he is the signing of the season, instead insisting that Leicester City new-boy N’Golo Kante should be considered as such.

Despite his humble claims, the French attacking midfielder has been in scintillating form in his debut campaign for the Hammers, scoring seven goals and bagging five assists in 22 league games.

Due to his impressive form, the 28-year-old has been linked with moves to the likes of Chelsea and Galatasaray, although Payet recently signed a new contract until at least 2021, with his wages believed to have more than doubled after interest from an unnamed Chinese club.

The ex-Marseille man, speaking to West Ham’s official club website, claimed that he is pleased by his own performances this season.

It is very nice to hear that people have said that about me. I am happy with how I have performed this season and how the team are doing so far. But I would say there are other players such as Kante who arrived from Ligue 1 and has had an incredible season in Leicester’s rise to the top of the table. A lot of that is down to him.

Kante joined the league leaders for as little as £5.6m in August and has gone on to become a key member in the surprising title challenge that they are posing, playing in 30 games this season and operating as a stern box-to-box midfielder.
