Emmanuel Adebayor’s proposed move from Tottenham to West Ham fell through because the striker was ‘very expensive’, according to Chairman David Gold.
The Togolese star is not in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans and has been frozen out at White Hart Lane.
Adebayor met with Slaven Bilic to try and thrash out a move to Upton Park but the deal eventually collapsed and the West Ham boss opted for fellow Croatian and Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic, who sealed a £3million move on deadline day.
When asked about Adebayor, Hammers co-owner David Gold told talkSPORT:
“I think it was more an enquiry.”
“Slaven showed interest – we showed a bit of interest – and then it sort of all went quiet and Slaven obviously decided against it.”
“[He’s a] very expensive player and I think he just weighed it up and felt with Andy [Carroll] coming back, with [Enner] Valencia coming back, with [Mauro] Zarate coming back and, of course, he was confident we would bring in the player from Hull [Jelavic].”
It was believed that Tottenham were prepared to subsidise Adebayor’s £100,000-a-week wages in order to ensure the exit of the forward, but the Irons still couldn’t push through a move.
Despite a deal for the former Arsenal hitman not coming to fruition Gold and co. still enjoyed a busy deadline day, with Jelavic, Victor Moses, Alex Song and Michail Antonio all signing up at the Boleyn Ground.
