Speaking to TalkSport, West Ham co-chairman David Gold has claimed that Alex Song is a risk, but one worth taking after the Hammers made him one of three deadline day acquisitions.
Despite becoming a key player in Sam Allardyce’s squad last season, the club were doubtful in re-signing the former Arsenal midfielder.
However, Slaven Bilic gave the go-ahead for the move to take place on deadline day, showing his faith in the Barcelona outcast.
David Gold seems to be most worried about Song’s injury record:
It does worry you and Alex Song does have a bit of a history.
The co-chairman also quickly disregarded the risk due the quality Song brings to the club:
However when quality players like him become available, sometimes you have to take a risk and that’s what we’ve done.
Song made a total of 28 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season, but is more likely to play a bit-part role in the upcoming campaign due to the signing of Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria earlier in the summer and the emergence of teenager Reece Oxford in the middle of the park.

During the interview, David Gold also confirmed that Andy Carroll is closing in on a return to fitness.
