Enner Valencia’s ankle injury may be worse than anticipated, as he may be facing a previously unplanned operation.
The Ecuadorian international has told local paper El Universo that the injury sustained in the Europa League clash with Astra Giurgiu has not been healing at all.
“First they said that in three weeks I should be walking, and then another week it was not ruled out (I might play).
“I have not gotten any better. The specialist wanted to operate on me yesterday, but the people of West Ham told me to take my time to talk to someone else and visit other doctors.”
“I talk to people to make the best decision because the more days pass, the more time we will lose.”
He had been ruled out until October, but this absence could be extended further if surgery is required. There are now only three fit recognised strikers in the squad – Mauro Zarate, Modibo Maiga, and the reportedly arrested Diafra Sakho.
The transfer window remains open until the end of the month, and a Valencia injury setback would surely increase the urgency with which the Hammers pursue a striker this month.
