Former Leeds United and current St Étienne winger Max Gradel has expressed his serire to return to England for the beginning of next season.
St Etienne manager Christophe Galtier recently confirmed that the player had asked to leave, suggesting to French television that a move to England seemed likely. Other French media outlets claim that West Ham, Stoke City and Bournemouth are all planning an approach to sign the Ivory Coast international. The St Etienne winger has been in fine form, scoring an impressive 17 goals in 31 games this season.
Speaking to L’Équipe on the 29th of May 2015, Gradel confirmed that England is his desire.
“I want to play in big competitions and push further.
“I will sit down at the table with St Étienne representatives to discuss and see if they harbour even greater ambitions for next season.
“This country (England) is my heart’s desire. That is no secret.”
Gradel did nearly join the Hammers in January 2014 when a loan deal was agreed between West ham and St Étienne, but the deal appeared to collapse at the last minute when West Ham tried to alter the already arranged deal. Gradel told the french Media “I went to London thinking I was about to be loaned. However, when I got there, West Ham told me they wanted me to sign a four year deal. As the club looked like they could be relegated, I preferred not to take any risks.”
Stoke City and Gradel’s former club Bournemouth are also apparently keen, meaning a bidding war may begin and with St Etienne set to demand a sizeable fee for their in demand winger. Italian giants Roma have also been linked with Gradel, but a Premier League move is a clear first choice for the winger.
