# West Ham made Yunus Musah approach before dramatic AC Milan U-turn

West Ham United reportedly made a serious approach for Yunus Musah during the summer before Ruben Amorim dramatically changed the midfielder’s status at AC Milan.

The United States international was repeatedly linked with a move away from San Siro after returning from his loan spell at Atalanta.

West Ham were among the clubs interested as Nuno Espírito Santo attempted to reshape his midfield following relegation.

Fresh reporting now suggests their interest went considerably further than a simple enquiry.

## West Ham made concrete Yunus Musah approach

West Ham asked Milan for “more than just information” about Musah during the summer, according to [Sport Witness’s latest report on the midfielder](https://sportwitness.co.uk/west-ham-sought-more-than-just-information-for-midfielder/).

Milan were also reportedly open to allowing the 23-year-old to leave at that stage.

Trabzonspor showed interest as well, but Musah’s situation changed after Amorim decided to assess him during pre-season.

That decision has proved significant.

Musah has since played more than 400 minutes across all competitions and developed into an increasingly important part of Milan’s midfield.

His revival comes after West Ham entered the closing stages of the summer window still looking for additional midfield strength, with [a defensive midfielder among the four positions Nuno wanted reinforced](https://readwestham.com/2026/08/24/west-ham-target-four-signings-as-nuno-identifies-priority-positions/).

The Hammers ultimately took their recruitment in a different direction.

## Ruben Amorim changes Musah’s Milan future

Musah’s transformation has been one of the more unexpected elements of Milan’s start to the campaign.

Rather than sanctioning a departure, Amorim has found a role for the American’s energy and versatility within his midfield.

Italian coverage has since described Musah as increasingly indispensable, with [his strong start earning renewed trust at Milan](https://www.casamilan.it/en/football-played/yunus-musah-from-outcast-to-indispensable-pillar-of-amorims-midfield/).

That makes any immediate revival of West Ham’s interest highly unlikely.

Musah is now playing regularly for a Milan side competing towards the top end of Serie A, while West Ham are attempting to secure an immediate return from the Championship.

The missed opportunity is still noteworthy because midfield balance remained one of the unresolved issues after West Ham completed their nine-signing summer rebuild.

Even after spending heavily, [ReadWestHam’s post-window squad assessment identified central midfield and defensive control as areas Nuno still needed to resolve](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/02/west-hams-squad-ranked-after-nine-signings-and-200m-summer-exodus/).

Musah’s athleticism and ability to operate in several positions would have offered another solution.

There is no indication that West Ham are currently preparing to return for him.

Instead, the latest information provides a clearer picture of how seriously they explored a move during the summer, before Amorim’s intervention transformed Musah from a potential departure into an important Milan player.
