# Nuno’s Two Changes Rescued West Ham After Millwall Nightmare

Nuno Espírito Santo needed only 45 minutes at Millwall to accept that his original West Ham plan was not working. What happened next may prove more important than the 2-2 scoreline.

West Ham went into half-time two goals behind after being overwhelmed by Millwall’s direct approach at The Den. Nuno responded immediately at the break: **Kyle Walker-Peters** and **Joël Piroe** were withdrawn; **Mohamadou Kanté** and **Pablo** entered.

The difference was enormous.

## Nuno Changed West Ham’s Midfield Dynamic

West Ham spent much of the opening period holding possession without doing anything meaningful with it. As highlighted in our [Millwall 2-2 West Ham match report](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/20/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-millwall-reaction-warning/?utm_source=gemini), the Lions repeatedly won physical duels while the Hammers struggled to exert pressure.

Nuno subsequently admitted his side failed to cope with those physical demands, as covered in our [post-match reaction from the West Ham boss](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/20/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-millwall-reaction-warning/?utm_source=gemini).

Kanté altered the midfield dynamic instantly. He carried the ball aggressively and drove into central spaces. Pablo’s introduction was equally pivotal—the Brazilian occupied central defenders, pressed without the ball, and provided the focal point West Ham lacked when Piroe was isolated.

## Kanté Provided the Spark West Ham Needed

While the double substitution did not yield an instant goal, it fundamentally flipped momentum.

Kanté halved the deficit with a 25-yard strike into the bottom corner before Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home Manor Solomon’s delivery six minutes later to level the match. Our [West Ham player ratings against Millwall](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/20/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-millwall-reaction-warning/?utm_source=gemini) reflected that turnaround, with both Kanté and Mavropanos receiving the highest marks.

Kanté’s late red card creates an immediate selection headache for the QPR fixture, as outlined in our [Kanté suspension update](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/20/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-millwall-reaction-warning/?utm_source=gemini). However, the tactical lesson must not be lost behind his late dismissal: Nuno recognized what West Ham lacked physically and acted decisively.

## West Ham Cannot Keep Relying on Rescue Missions

There is also an explicit warning here. West Ham cannot afford to require half-time surgery every time an opponent disrupts their game plan.

The Hammers remain second in the Championship after eight games with 15 points and a league-high 22 goals. Supporters can keep up with the promotion campaign through our updated [West Ham fixtures and results page](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/20/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-millwall-reaction-warning/?utm_source=gemini).

Nuno deserves credit for fixing Saturday’s tactical setup at the break. His primary challenge now is ensuring West Ham do not fall into the same trap when QPR visit London Stadium on October 9.
