# West Ham can break 18-year Championship scoring record at Millwall

West Ham United have the chance to make Championship history when they face Millwall at The Den on Saturday.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have scored **20 league goals through their opening seven matches**, following the emphatic 6-0 victory over Wrexham.

That is the joint-fastest any club has reached 20 goals since the Championship was rebranded in 2004, matching Wolverhampton Wanderers’ remarkable start to the 2008/09 campaign.

Wolves went on to score 23 goals across their opening eight matches that season.

That leaves West Ham with a simple target against Millwall.

**Three goals would equal the 18-year benchmark. Four would establish a new Championship-era record.**

## West Ham attack matches title-winning Wolves

Wolves began the 2008/09 campaign at a remarkable pace under Mick McCarthy.

Their opening seven Championship matches produced 21 goals before a 2-0 victory over Bristol City took them to **23 after eight games**. They eventually won the Championship with 90 points and scored 80 league goals.

West Ham now have an opportunity to go beyond them.

The Hammers’ attacking numbers have accelerated significantly during their recent run.

Six different players scored against Wrexham, with Jarrod Bowen, Joël Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kanté and Manor Solomon all finding the net.

That result took West Ham to **20 goals scored and nine conceded**, while leaving Nuno’s side top of the Championship on goal difference with 14 points.

Read West Ham’s [player ratings from the 6-0 demolition of Wrexham](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/11/west-ham-player-ratings-wrexham-6-0/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) highlighted just how many different attacking threats Nuno currently possesses.

## Millwall defence offers West Ham opportunity

Saturday will present a very different challenge.

Millwall have conceded **13 goals in seven Championship matches**, while scoring 13 themselves, leaving Alex Neil’s side 11th heading into the derby.

Their results have also been unpredictable.

The Lions have recorded convincing victories but have already conceded five against Southampton, three against Wrexham and three against Blackburn.

That should encourage a West Ham attack averaging almost **three goals per league match**.

Nuno cannot expect another performance as straightforward as the Wrexham victory, particularly in the atmosphere of a derby at The Den.

Millwall also possess threats of their own, with Read West Ham highlighting [why in-form Lyndon Dykes will require close attention](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/17/lyndon-dykes-millwall-west-ham-danger-man/).

But West Ham’s scoring record gives them reason to travel with confidence.

## Nuno can make Championship history at The Den

The significance goes beyond one entertaining start.

Wolves’ 2008/09 side turned their explosive opening into a Championship title and Premier League promotion.

West Ham are attempting to achieve the same ultimate objective after relegation last season.

Nobody at Rush Green will be celebrating a scoring record in September as though promotion has already been secured.

However, producing an attacking start comparable with one of the division’s strongest title-winning teams illustrates the level Nuno’s side have reached.

Read West Ham expects the manager to retain most of his successful league attack in [our predicted XI against Millwall](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/17/west-ham-predicted-xi-vs-millwall/).

Another three goals would put West Ham alongside Wolves’ historic benchmark.

**Four would put this West Ham team out on their own.**
