# West Ham’s Jethro Medine wins Robson praise after role switch

**West Ham youngster Jethro Medine earned Mark Robson’s player-of-the-match verdict after switching roles in Monday’s Under-21 victory over Liverpool.**

Joel Kerr scored the late winner at Rush Green, but Medine’s contribution at wing-back caught his coach’s attention.

It followed an attacking assignment against Aldershot, where he supplied three assists in a 3–0 National League Cup win.

## Jethro Medine impresses in different West Ham roles

“Jethro Medine was my Player of the Match tonight,” Robson said in comments [reported by Hammers News](https://www.hammers.news/news/outstanding-west-ham-kid-singled-out-as-17-year-old-stuns-liverpool/).

“He’s been very consistent for us and had some good defensive moments today.”

Robson explained that Medine had operated as a number ten against Aldershot before moving to wing-back against Liverpool.

The change gave him a different responsibility. After helping create goals in one match, he contributed to keeping the opposition out in the next.

West Ham secured their first Premier League 2 victory of the season, with Jephthah Medine providing the assist for Kerr’s winner.

Supporters can watch the decisive moments in the [club’s official Liverpool highlights](https://www.whufc.com/en/video/0_yk36pkow?provider=stream&related=3ed927a9-48ea-4e79-8592-468e0a175ea9).

## Academy departures open opportunities

The performance comes as Robson reshapes his options following the [loan departures of Preston Fearon and Ryan Battrum](https://readwestham.com/2026/09/15/west-ham-academy-loans-fearon-battrum/).

Fearon has joined Forest Green Rovers, while Battrum has moved to Southend United for senior experience.

Their departures create space for other players to establish themselves within the Under-21 group.

For Jethro Medine, the immediate opportunity is clear: build on two contrasting performances and make himself useful across Robson’s team.

His coach’s praise recognises that progress. Sustaining it is the next test.
