West Ham vs Fulham stats reveal the cost of chasing

Nuno Espírito Santo wearing West Ham United training kit

West Ham twice found a way back against Fulham. When the third opportunity arrived, they could not take it.

That was the frustration beneath Tuesday’s Carabao Cup exit. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side remained competitive, produced two equalisers and threatened another late on. Yet the match also exposed the difference between keeping a contest alive and doing enough to win it.

The West Ham vs Fulham stats capture that tension. There was little between the teams in the number of attempts. There was a clearer gap in how often those efforts reached the goalkeeper.

West Ham vs Fulham stats show where attacks fell short

According to Sky Sports’ match statistics, West Ham finished with 11 shots to Fulham’s 12, despite having only 38.3 per cent possession.

Statistic West Ham Fulham
Possession 38.3% 61.7%
Shots 11 12
Shots on target 3 6
Corners 5 4

Having less of the ball did not prevent West Ham from reaching shooting positions. The problem was what followed: three attempts on target, compared with Fulham’s six.

Shot accuracy cannot explain every chance. Pressure on the shooter, the angle and defensive interventions all matter. But these figures help frame Nuno’s assessment. West Ham competed for opportunities without matching the visitors’ ability to turn them into efforts on goal.

Two mistakes presented different problems

At the other end, treating every concession as evidence of the same defensive weakness would miss the detail.

The Sun’s account of the match describes Joachim Andersen releasing César Palacios with a long pass for Fulham’s second. The winner came after Mohamadou Kanté lost possession near his own penalty area, allowing Oscar Bobb to punish West Ham.

One goal asks questions about defending space behind the back line. The other concerns the choices made when possession becomes dangerous close to home.

The coaching response should be equally specific. Against a direct pass, defenders must judge the runner, the ball and their own positioning. Under pressure near goal, the player receiving possession needs both an early decision and a usable outlet.

Those are connected responsibilities, but they are not interchangeable. Simply demanding greater concentration offers less than identifying where each situation became recoverable — and where it stopped being so.

It is the detail behind Nuno’s frustration with West Ham’s costly mistakes.

The late chances complicate the verdict

There is another reason to resist describing this as a match Fulham comfortably managed.

The Guardian’s report records Bowen shooting over and Castellanos having a late effort cleared off the line.

West Ham were still asking questions after Bobb’s winner. Their route back remained open, even if the finish they needed never arrived.

Earlier, Pablo’s first West Ham goal had supplied a second equaliser before the interval. That response mattered. So did the failure to make th
