West Ham United’s rapid move for Joel Piroe becomes considerably easier to understand when his previous Championship campaign is examined.
Nuno Espírito Santo identified the Leeds United striker as one of his leading attacking targets before the Hammers accelerated negotiations following their opening 2-2 draw at Burnley.
Piroe is now closing in on a move to east London, with The Athletic reporting that the proposed agreement is an initial loan containing an obligation to buy if West Ham secure promotion.
West Ham are not simply betting on reputation. They are moving for a striker who has already delivered exactly what Nuno needs this season.
Joel Piroe has already powered one Championship promotion
Piroe finished the 2024/25 Championship campaign with 19 league goals, winning the division’s Golden Boot as Leeds claimed the title and returned to the Premier League.
Leeds’ official profile credits his clinical finishing as a major factor in their promotion, while his performances also earned him a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
His most spectacular afternoon came against Stoke City.
With Leeds attempting to secure promotion, Piroe scored four times before half-time in a 6-0 victory. Leeds confirmed he converted all four of his first-half opportunities, taking his league total to 19.
That sort of production is particularly valuable for West Ham because there should be considerably less uncertainty about whether Piroe can adapt to Championship football.
The 27-year-old knows the schedule, the physical demands and the pressure attached to playing for a club expected to win promotion.
West Ham need reliability more than another gamble
West Ham’s recent striker recruitment has repeatedly produced expensive uncertainty.
Niclas Füllkrug is now heading towards another exit after struggling to establish himself in east London, while Nuno entered the new campaign still asking publicly for additional attacking options.
Piroe represents a very different calculation.
Rather than buying primarily on potential or attempting to predict whether a striker can translate performances from another league, West Ham have targeted somebody with a substantial Championship scoring record.
He also offers more than one way to contribute.
Piroe can operate as the central striker but has previously played slightly deeper, while his finishing allows him to remain dangerous even during games where he receives relatively few touches.
That could suit a West Ham side containing Jarrod Bowen and Manor Solomon, who can create opportunities from wider positions.
Piroe increasingly looks like one of the most targeted pieces of that rebuild.
Promotion clause makes Piroe gamble even more logical
The reported structure also reduces some of West Ham’s immediate risk.
If the permanent obligation is only activated by promotion, West Ham would make their major commitment after Piroe has helped achieve the objective he was signed for.
Failure to return immediately would leave the club without the same compulsory permanent expenditure.
There are no guarantees that his previous numbers will simply repeat themselves in east London.
But a striker who scored 19 goals while helping Leeds win this division represents considerably less guesswork than many alternatives available to Nuno.
West Ham needed Championship goals.
Piroe has already proved he can provide them.
