# Reiss Nelson can solve problem exposed by £68m West Ham exit

**Reiss Nelson could give West Ham United a different dimension as Nuno Espírito Santo continues rebuilding an attack stripped of one of its biggest threats this summer. The Reiss Nelson West Ham deal is reportedly close, and there is a clear footballing reason why the Hammers are prepared to take a chance on the Arsenal winger.**

## Reiss Nelson West Ham move addresses Summerville loss

Crysencio Summerville’s £68million departure to Al Hilal removed one of West Ham’s most dangerous ball carriers from the squad.

Nelson would offer Nuno another option rather than simply duplicating Solomon.

Brentford’s own analysis of Nelson when he joined them last summer highlighted his ability as a dribbler, his technical quality and his comfort receiving the ball in attacking areas. Their data also showed how effective he had previously been at progressing possession and beating opponents one-on-one.

Those qualities could become particularly important in the Championship.

West Ham are likely to face opponents prepared to defend deeper for long periods, especially at the London Stadium. Having players capable of receiving possession in tight spaces and carrying the ball beyond the first defender gives Nuno another route through those games.

Nelson can also operate across the wide positions, increasing the competition around Solomon and Jarrod Bowen without requiring either to start every match during a demanding campaign.

## Injury record makes the deal a calculated gamble

There is an obvious reason West Ham still have a decision to make.

Nelson’s loan at Fulham was cut short by a hamstring injury, while he managed only 14 appearances during his subsequent season with Brentford. The Bees confirmed in May that he returned to Arsenal after a campaign in which opportunities had again been limited.

That explains why the reported medical concern deserves attention rather than being dismissed.

West Ham cannot afford to build their promotion push around players who are repeatedly unavailable. Equally, Nelson’s circumstances may be what makes a deal possible for a player who has considerable Premier League experience and is still only 26.

The London Standard reports that Arsenal are willing to facilitate an exit after Nelson entered the final year of his contract, with West Ham having received encouragement during talks.

If the medical checks satisfy West Ham, the attraction is clear.

Summerville’s departure left Nuno needing more individual quality in wide areas. Solomon has filled part of that gap, but adding Nelson would give West Ham another player capable of creating something without relying solely on structured build-up.

The fitness question makes it a gamble.

His ability makes it one worth exploring.
