# West Ham hit with Edson Alvarez injury blow ahead of Burnley Championship opener

**West Ham have been handed an Edson Alvarez injury concern after the midfielder picked up a niggle during Saturday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Portsmouth.**

The Mexico international was substituted during the second half before heading straight down the tunnel at full-time rather than joining his team-mates for their lap of appreciation.

That initially led to speculation about his future, but the reason appears to have been fitness-related. [Hammers News reports that a senior West Ham source confirmed Alvarez had picked up a niggle](https://www.hammers.news/news/real-reason-edson-alvarez-went-straight-down-the-tunnel-after-west-ham-win/) and wanted to avoid aggravating it further.

> It's been revealed that this was due to the 28-year-old picking up a minor injury. Not believed to be serious.\

## Edson Alvarez injury to be assessed before Burnley

Alvarez was reportedly walking gingerly as he left the pitch and will now be assessed ahead of Sunday’s Championship opener at Burnley.

The problem is not thought to be serious, although it is currently too early to know whether the 28-year-old will be available at Turf Moor.

Alvarez had only recently returned to Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad following Mexico’s World Cup campaign and was short of match action before starting against Portsmouth.

His availability could become more important given the work West Ham are still trying to complete in midfield. [ReadWestHam highlighted central midfield as one of three transfer priorities before the Burnley game](https://readwestham.com/2026/08/09/solomon-medical-27m-striker-call-and-3-west-ham-transfer-priorities-before-burnley/), with Lewis Orford impressing but further depth still required.

Alvarez’s long-term future has been uncertain throughout the summer after he spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce.

However, the latest report says his decision to leave the pitch quickly had nothing to do with a potential transfer. Nuno is also said to have been encouraged by the midfielder’s attitude since his return to Rush Green.

West Ham will now hope the problem settles quickly.

With the Championship season beginning at Burnley on 16 August, Nuno has little time to prepare his strongest available midfield for the first major test of the promotion campaign.
