# “I’m ready for this” – Mohamadou Kante declares intent to lead West Ham promotion charge

**Mohamadou Kante believes he is ready to play an important role for West Ham as Nuno Espírito Santo prepares his side for a Championship promotion campaign.**

The 20-year-old has been given regular opportunities during pre-season after making 14 senior appearances last term, and remains one of the academy players pushing to establish himself permanently in Nuno’s squad.

Speaking to [West Ham’s official website](https://www.whufc.com/en/news/kante-or-i-want-to-keep-growing), Kanté said his focus is on continuing his development and taking advantage of the opportunities available to him this season.

His pathway could become particularly important given the uncertainty surrounding Nuno’s midfield before Sunday’s Championship opener at Burnley.

## Mohamadou Kanté targeting bigger West Ham role

Kanté has spent much of the summer training and playing with the senior squad as Nuno assesses which of West Ham’s younger players are ready for regular Championship football.

[ReadWestHam identified Kanté as one of the academy players with the strongest chance of earning a first-team role](https://readwestham.com/2026/07/17/seven-young-stars-ready-to-step-up-for-west-ham-next-season/) before pre-season began.

The French midfielder has since featured against Colchester, Stevenage and Rangers, giving Nuno a longer opportunity to assess him alongside established first-team players.

His position in the squad has taken on greater significance because West Ham are still attempting to strengthen in central midfield.

[ReadWestHam’s latest transfer analysis identified midfield as one of the priorities still facing Nuno](https://readwestham.com/2026/08/09/solomon-medical-27m-striker-call-and-3-west-ham-transfer-priorities-before-burnley/), while Edson Álvarez has also emerged as a fitness doubt after picking up a niggle against Portsmouth.

[The latest Edson Álvarez injury update](https://readwestham.com/2026/08/09/west-ham-hit-with-edson-alvarez-injury-blow-ahead-of-burnley-championship-opener/) means another opportunity could open up in the centre of the pitch if the Mexico international is not ready for Turf Moor.

Kanté remains relatively inexperienced, and the Championship will provide a significant physical challenge across 46 league matches.

West Ham, though, have made clear they see considerable potential in him. The midfielder is under contract until 2031 and his increased involvement during pre-season suggests he will continue to receive opportunities around Nuno’s squad.

For Kanté, the objective is straightforward.

After getting his first taste of senior football last season, he now wants to prove he can become a regular part of West Ham’s promotion push.
