# ‘Need to be’: Joel Veltman makes immediate West Ham promotion demand

**Joel Veltman has made his West Ham promotion expectations clear immediately after completing his free transfer to the London Stadium.**

West Ham officially confirmed the arrival of the experienced defender on Thursday following the expiry of his Brighton contract.

Veltman has signed an initial one-year deal, with the club holding an option for a further season. He will wear the No.34 shirt and has already joined Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad in training.

Speaking in his [first interview with West Ham](https://www.whufc.com/en/news/joel-veltman-or-the-first-interview), the Dutchman wasted little time setting the standard for his new club.

“We know that West Ham need to be in the Premier League,” Veltman said, before confirming that returning to the top flight is the team’s goal this season.

## Veltman sets West Ham promotion target

The message reflects exactly why West Ham have added a player with Veltman’s experience.

The 34-year-old spent six seasons with Brighton and made 165 Premier League appearances. Before moving to England, he captained Ajax and won three Eredivisie titles.

His first comments underline another part of the attraction.

Veltman spoke about bringing leadership, a winning mentality and togetherness to Nuno’s squad. That experience could prove valuable during a 46-game Championship campaign where West Ham will carry significant pressure to challenge for immediate promotion.

There could also be an immediate opportunity to feature.

West Ham host Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup on Saturday before beginning their Championship campaign against Burnley the following weekend.

Veltman has already made his expectations clear before either game.

For a club attempting to rebuild after relegation, returning to the Premier League is not simply an ambition in the new signing’s eyes. It is the standard West Ham should be aiming for.
