Nuno has clear West Ham decision after academy stars impress

West Ham United have already seen several academy players push for greater first-team involvement this summer, and Arsenal’s team selection against Girona provides another reminder of the opportunities available to young players.

The West Ham academy opportunity under Nuno Espírito Santo could become increasingly important during a demanding Championship campaign.

Arsenal have named Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman in their starting XI for Saturday evening’s pre-season friendly against Girona. Summer signing Christos Tzolis also starts alongside Viktor Gyokeres in an experimental side selected by Mikel Arteta.

The fixture itself has little direct bearing on West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League. However, the willingness of another London club to give talented youngsters significant senior exposure provides an interesting comparison with Nuno’s work this summer.

West Ham academy opportunity already taking shape

West Ham have not been short of academy involvement during pre-season.

Lewis Orford completed 90 minutes during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with 1. FC Magdeburg and registered the assist for Maximilian Kilman’s opener. ReadWestHam subsequently covered how Orford wants to establish himself in Nuno’s squad and help the club return to the Premier League.

Ezra Mayers has also featured throughout the summer after making ten senior appearances last season. The 19-year-old has publicly outlined his ambition to become a regular first-team player, with ReadWestHam reporting on Saturday that Mayers hopes to become another academy graduate who establishes himself at the club.

George Earthy, Josh Ajala and several other youngsters have also received minutes during West Ham’s preparations.

Nuno therefore appears willing to give academy players opportunities if their performances justify them.

Arsenal provide useful comparison for Nuno

Arsenal’s confirmed team against Girona includes Nwaneri and 16-year-old Dowman alongside experienced players such as Ben White, Kai Havertz and Gyokeres.

The Evening Standard confirmed Arteta’s starting XI before the 7pm kick-off, with the Premier League champions using pre-season to continue developing players already considered capable of contributing at senior level.

Nwaneri is no longer simply an academy prospect. He has already demonstrated that he can contribute to Arsenal’s first team, while Dowman is now being exposed to senior football despite his age.

West Ham cannot simply copy Arsenal’s approach. Their circumstances are different and promotion back to the Premier League will put immediate pressure on Nuno to deliver results.

However, Championship football could also create genuine opportunities.

A long domestic season requires greater squad depth, while West Ham’s financial and recruitment decisions could leave space for players such as Orford, Mayers and Earthy to establish themselves.

Nuno must reward players who take their chance

The encouraging sign from West Ham’s pre-season has been that academy players have not been included purely to make up the numbers.

Orford contributed directly against Magdeburg. Mayers has looked comfortable around the senior squad, while several youngsters were trusted during the closing stages in Germany.

West Ham’s academy has always been an important part of the club’s identity. The current group now have an opportunity to turn that reputation into first-team minutes.

Arsenal’s approach against Girona is another reminder that age does not have to prevent talented players from becoming genuine squad options.

For Nuno, the challenge is identifying which West Ham youngsters are ready now and continuing to give them meaningful opportunities once competitive football begins.
