# West Ham line up former Rangers captain if Wan-Bissaka leaves

**West Ham have held talks over signing former Rangers captain James Tavernier on a free transfer.**

The transfer possibility depends on Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaving the London Stadium this summer.

[TEAMtalk reports](https://www.teamtalk.com/newcastle-united/charlotte-fc-james-tavernier-newcastle-united) that West Ham have spoken about a possible move for the 34-year-old. However, the club are not expected to pursue another right-back while Wan-Bissaka remains in Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad.

Tavernier is considering his options after leaving Rangers. Charlotte FC currently lead the race, while Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa have also explored his situation. Burnley and Derby County have spoken to his representatives.

No final decision has been made. Charlotte’s position could force West Ham to resolve Wan-Bissaka’s future quickly if they want to remain in contention.

ReadWestHam recently reported that [West Ham rejected a low offer for Wan-Bissaka](https://readwestham.com/2026/07/19/west-ham-reject-low-wan-bissaka-approach-as-lazio-circle/). Lazio reportedly offered around €10million, while the Hammers were seeking approximately £25million.

## Why James Tavernier to West Ham depends on Wan-Bissaka

Tavernier would arrive as an experienced squad option rather than a long-term investment. TEAMtalk says interested clubs value his leadership and versatility following his departure from Ibrox.

A free transfer would also allow West Ham to strengthen without using a significant part of their transfer budget. However, adding another senior right-back before selling Wan-Bissaka would leave the squad unnecessarily crowded.

Tavernier’s experience could appeal during a demanding 46-game Championship season. He has captained a major club, understands British football and could provide competition without requiring time to adapt.

The James Tavernier to West Ham talks remain at an early stage. West Ham must first receive an acceptable offer for Wan-Bissaka, while Charlotte currently appear better placed to complete the signing.
