# The situation: How the weekend’s results change West Ham’s survival chances

- **West Ham lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday**
- **VAR controversially ruled out a late equaliser for the Hammers**
- **Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 with Leeds United to make the gap two points**

West Ham United’s Premier League survival hopes took another blow as they lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the London Stadium on Sunday. [The Hammers held their own, equalising in the dying seconds](https://readwestham.com/2026/05/10/west-ham-0-1-arsenal-premier-league/) before VAR cruelly removed the goal in controversial circumstances.

[Nuno Espirito Santo’s men](https://readwestham.com/2026/05/11/nuno-espirito-santo-west-ham-loss-arsenal/) held their own for much of the game and only went behind due to a wicked deflection from Leandro Trossard’s shot. Most would say they deserved their equaliser, [but the officiating team made a decision that could have repercussions at both end of the table](https://readwestham.com/2026/05/11/west-ham-contact-pgmo-disallowed-callum-wilson-goal/) with [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/), rightly, feeling hard done by.

The Irons loss left the door open for [Tottenham Hotspur](https://readtottenham.com/) to make the gap to safety five points. Instead, Spurs could not hold off [Leeds United](https://readwestham.com/2026/04/05/west-ham-0-2-leeds-united/) on Monday night, drawing 1-1. They will know head to [Chelsea](https://readchelsea.com/) next week, whilst the Hammers go north to [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/). All is still to play for.

## 16th, 15th, 14th

Nottingham Forest held Newcastle United to a 1-1 draw with Elliot Anderson scoring late against his former club. Forest’s result, combined with [West Ham’s](https://www.whufc.com/) loss on Sunday, now means that Forest are safe in the Premier League, making it a two horse race for survival.

Above the, [Crystal Palace](https://readcrystalpalace.com/) also drew, fighting out a 2-2 draw with [Everton](https://readwestham.com/2026/04/25/west-ham-2-1-everton-premier-league/). Should results go their way, the Hammers could be reliant on [Everton](https://readeverton.com/) on the final day, with the Toffees hosting Spurs as they go for Europe this season.

Leeds United sit in 14th after doing the Irons a favour and holding off Spurs. The Lilywhites scored a late penalty and had chances to win the game as they prepare for another season in the top flight.

## The bottom two

Burnley put a dent in [Aston Villa’s](https://readwestham.com/2026/03/22/aston-villa-2-0-west-ham-premier-league/) top five campaign as they drew 2-2 at Turf Moor. Unai Emery’s side are still likely to make Champions League qualification this season, but Burnley put on a good showing to mean it will go down to the last two games.

[Wolverhampton Wanderers](https://readwestham.com/2026/04/10/west-ham-4-0-wolverhampton-wanderers-premier-league/) had an opportunity to take themselves off the bottom of the table but quite simply did not show up against [Brighton & Hove Albion](https://readbrighton.com/). The 3-0 loss now means that Wolves have conceded 66 goals this season.
