# Pundit believes West Ham have ‘missed a trick’ this season

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has claimed [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/03/22/pundit-defends-david-moyes-following-michail-antonio-criticism/) have ‘missed a trick’ this season.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League and still being in the hunt for a [top-four](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) finish, the Hammers are in danger of falling short of their achievements from the 2020/21 campaign.

Having been soundly beaten [3-1](https://www.whufc.com/news/goals-tottenham-3-1-west-ham) by London rivals Tottenham on the weekend, questions have been asked about the squad as injuries and fitness issues mount up.

Speaking on [talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/1069025/danny-murphy-west-ham-michail-antonio-january-transfer/), Murphy suggested that David Moyes would’ve wanted to bolster the ranks in the January window.

> I do think they missed a trick in not getting someone. Even if they couldn’t get someone they thought would take his place, someone who can compete at his level. Someone a bit younger or hungry who doesn’t mind coming off the bench. All the top clubs in the Premier League, when a team makes a signing in your position you automatically jump up a gear. You know you may get your place taken. When Antonio is fit, generally he plays. Although he \[Moyes\] said the right things, I don’t think he got what he wanted \[in January\]. He’s an intelligent man, why wouldn’t he want someone in?

Michail Antonio is currently on a [10 Premier League game goal drought](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michail-antonio/leistungsdaten/spieler/104124) and Jarrod Bowen is sidelined through injury.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Spot on.

Albeit it remains imminently possible that the Hammers could achieve something remarkable this season, those chances have undoubtedly been damaged by an apparent [loss of momentum](https://www.skysports.com/west-ham-united-results) in recent weeks.

Strengthening the [squad](https://www.whufc.com/players/713) in the summer has to be a priority, hopefully with the lure of European football still on the table.
