# OTD: West Ham beat Southampton 2-0 in EPL encounter

On this day (March 8) in 2000, [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/03/08/virals-west-ham-hold-preliminary-discussions-to-sign-boubacar-kamara/) overcame Southampton 2-0 at Upton Park.

Goals from Paulo Wanchope and [Trevor Sinclair](https://twitter.com/WestHam/status/1475058816148393985) were enough to see off the Saints in East London on this occasion.

Also [involved for West Ham](https://www.11v11.com/matches/west-ham-united-v-southampton-08-march-2000-357/) were Rio Ferdinand, Stuart Pearce and Frank Lampard.

The Hammers were on the crest of a wave at the time under [Harry Redknapp](https://www.whufc.com/club/history/managers/harry-redknapp) and another victory here kept fading European aspirations alive.

However, those dreams weren’t to be as the Irons’ finished the [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=8&ha=-1) season in ninth.

Yet another memorable Upton Park occasion.

Whilst the London Stadium is becoming more like a home, many will [never truly accept it as a replacement](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/fixtures-results/four-years-pain-leaving-upton-18227817) for the iconic former ground.

Over time and with the current success of David Moyes’ side and it’s own crop of modern-day heroes, perhaps one day the [new stadium](https://www.london-stadium.com/index.html) will indeed be a home from home for the loyal Hammers’ supporters.
