# Virals: West Ham have ‘activated’ two-year extension for Ben Johnson

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/02/23/virals-agent-confirms-west-ham-talks-regarding-florian-thauvin/) have reportedly ‘activated’ a two-year extension option within the contract of full-back [Ben Johnson](https://readwestham.com/2021/12/07/virals-west-ham-confirm-double-injury-blow-to-defensive-stars/).

The 22-year-old was due to become a [free agent at the end of the season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-johnson/profil/spieler/468002) as talks contained over a new deal.

However, those talks came to nothing and instead the club triggered a 24-month option in the [current contract](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/west-ham-united-fc/ben-johnson-50274/#:~:text=Ben%20Johnson%20signed%20a%203,cap%20hit%20of%20%C2%A31%2C000%2C000.) to tie Johnson down until 2024.

That’s according to a report from [Standard Sport](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/ben-johnson-contract-west-ham-arsenal-tottenham-transfer-news-b984162.html), as cited by [Jack Rosser](https://twitter.com/JackRosser_/status/1496462948390379529) on Twitter.

The report claims that Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool had all taken an interest in the London-born ace following a string of [impressive](https://www.sofascore.com/player/ben-johnson/914412) performances.

So far this season Johnson – hailed as [‘really important’](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/david-moyes-europa-press-conference-22051763) by David Moyes has made [20 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-johnson/leistungsdaten/spieler/468002) for the first team, scoring once in the Premier League.

Valued at £2.7million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-johnson/marktwertverlauf/spieler/468002)), up until this point the talented youngster may have suffered from supreme versatility.

Despite impressing when called upon, being capable of [playing on either side](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-johnson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/468002) as a full back and in more advanced positions has led to Johnson arguably being a victim of his own adaptability having failed to nail down a starting spot for any prolonged period.

This new deal, combined with a dip in form from Vladimir Coufal and the [dwindling contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-fredericks/profil/spieler/140191) of Ryan Fredericks, could see the Englishman given a run in a favoured right-back berth.
