# Virals: West Ham only made ‘loan offer’ for Marseille ace Duje Caleta-Car

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/02/01/virals-west-ham-made-late-contact-with-atalanta-for-duvan-zapata/) reportedly only made a ‘loan offer’ to sign Marseille defender [Duje Caleta-Car](https://readwestham.com/2022/01/31/virals-west-ham-in-advanced-talks-to-sign-duje-caleta-car/) in the January transfer window.

The Hammers were [heavily linked](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10450065/West-Ham-fail-bid-sign-Marseille-defender-Duje-Caleta-Car-loan-option-buy.html) with a move for the 25-year-old and had been expected to make a permanent bid for the Croatian.

However, any pursuit of the ace failed to materialise as David Moyes [struggled to add any player](https://www.skysports.com/football/west-ham-united-transfers-done-deals) to the squad at the London Stadium.

According to a report from [RMC Sport](https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/transferts/mercato-en-direct-toutes-les-infos-et-rumeurs-de-la-derniere-journee_LN-202201310009.html), as cited by [Sport Witness](https://twitter.com/Sport_Witness/status/1488480146055118849) on Twitter, there was no attempt to land Caleta-Car on a permanent basis.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 club didn’t receive a ‘sufficiently interesting’ offer for the [20-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/duje-caleta-car/nationalmannschaft/spieler/238266/verein_id/3556) star.

This season Caleta-Car has earned an impressive [7.15 average Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/duje-caleta-car/257091) in 11 league outings.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at £14.4million and under contract in France until 2023 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/duje-caleta-car/marktwertverlauf/spieler/238266)), any attempt to sign the Croatian defender would likely have to of been a bid upwards of £15million at least.

Instead, it would appear that the Hammers were attempting to [bolster their ranks](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) without incurring the cost attached.

This apparent approach has left Moyes without adequate strength-in-depth and with a central defender in [Kurt Zouma needing to return](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/10/west-ham-optimistic-kurt-zouma-to-return-from-injury-ahead-of-schedule) from a long-term layoff fit and firing for the remainder of the season.
